Chickpeas are a legume - they are also known as Garbanzo Beans or Gram. It is one of the worlds earliest cultivated legumes, with the oldest chickpeas being found in the Middle East over 7,500 years ago. They are a major dietary staple for millions of people around the world.

Chickpeas are self pollinated and propagated from seeds. They can be grown in poor soils without using nitrogen fertilizers, because the plant has the ability to draw nitrogen out of the atmosphere, which makes chickpeas especially nutritious for humans, while also helping to replenish the soil in areas that have been overworked.
